February is Heart Month, not just because we celebrate love over Valentines day but because it’s important to value, understand, and discuss heart health.
There are many factors that can affect your heart health, such as age, family history, smoking, poor diet, and high blood pressure.
Fortunately, there are some things you can do to help maintain a healthy heart. The first step is start with a full night of sleep. Aiming for at least 7 hours of sleep as an adult helps maintain calcium levels, and artery function.
It’s also important to keep stress away, as much as possible. If you have high blood pressure, the pressure that stress puts on your body can cause your heart additional harm. You should get your blood pressure checked every two years.
There are many diets, such as the DASH diet or Mediterranean diet that promote a healthy heart. It’s a good idea to cut back on salt, alcohol and to eliminate smoking. Cutting out saturated fats, such as red meat, dairy, or fried and processed foods. As adults it’s wise to get a cholesterol blood test once every 5 years.
One of the most important ways to maintain a healthy heart is getting at least 150 minutes of exercise a week. That’s only 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Breaking a slight sweat can really help reduce heart disease.
If it’s hard to work out after a long day, remember that wearing MEGAComfort insoles helps reduce pain and fatigue. Being able to keep you going all day is our goal at MEGAComfort, to keep you healthy, happy, and on your feet!
