Everyone has 15 minutes in their work day that can potentially change their life. That may sound like an ambitious promise. However, if you take that 15 minutes and break it down into 5 minute increments, the task becomes even easier. Getting up three times a day, from your desk, and walking for 5 minutes can prevent and even reverse harm done to the legs, caused by prolonged sitting.

Back in 2014, Indiana University’s School of Public Health-Bloomington, conducted an experiment testing the effects of walking for 5 minute increments after sitting for 3 hours at a time. The study showed that “prolonged sitting impairs endothelial function, which is an early marker of cardiovascular disease, and that breaking sitting time prevents the decline in that function.”

If you work in an office, evaluate your work day. How long do you sit at your desk? Maybe 8 or more hours? Your body can feel the impact of sitting after only 1 hour. Sitting for extended periods of time is continually proven to impact cholesterol, weight, metabolic function, and cardiovascular diseases. Giving 5 minutes of your work day back to your body, is an easy task that can prevent injury and disease.

B2B News Network, recently wrote an article about the importance of staying active at work. MEGAComfort’s workplace wellness atmosphere was used as an example of how to companies can include healthy activities in the workplace. At MEGAComfort, Sara Ackermann of CorSynergy Studio aToronto based Pilates instructor, teaches once a week at our MegaComfort headquarters.

MEGAComfort seeks to lead by example, providing yoga mats, fitness balls, and other exercise equipment to employees to use at work or to try out at home. Owner and leader at MEGAComfort, Barbara Orvitz explained that, “Basically we decided as a health and wellness company, we wanted to lead by example and offer this program to our team to make them more health consciousness, even in their work environment.”

In the office, pilates instructor, Sara Ackermann focuses on building strength, restorative therapy, and posture awareness. Her methodology is based on the understanding that, “when you’re sitting at a desk all day, and you open up your structure and relax your muscles, you increase the general relaxation throughout the body.”

Need some ideas for getting moving in the office?

  1. Instead of calling your colleague to answer your question, get up and walk to their cubicle, office, or work station. Longer meetings can be done while walking around the office or building.
  2. Get up and stay hydrated. It’s easy to sit at your desk and forget to stay hydrated. Set hourly alerts reminding you to grab a cup of water. Not only will you stay hydrated, but you’ll get your body moving by going to the water cooler.
  3. Take a walk at lunch time. We know sometimes lunch time can get busy and maybe you don’t have time to leave your desk for your lunch break. Regardless of how much time you have, pause and take a quick walk around the office.

No matter how you slice up your time, don’t sit for too long. Whether you want to take a 15 minute walk or three separate walks for 5 minutes, make sure you are wearing proper shoes with good support. MEGAComfort insoles are ergonomically designed by Dr. Kevan Orvitz with the workplace in mind. Our patented dual layer memory foam insoles provide the cushioning and support you need to prevent injury, while reducing pain and fatigue.
